Process
Healthy Eating and Active Living in Northern BC (HEAL North) is healthy community development initiative based on the belief that needed changes in Northern British Columbia must be identified in northern communities, by northern communities, and for northern communities. The process of change must be carried out by local individuals from across sectors, working together to achieve meaningful and sustainable results.
HEAL originated as a grassroots network to support healthy eating and active living opportunities aimed at the prevention of Type 2 Diabetes. HEAL has gone from a grassroots informal network to a formalized entity within the Population Health Structure of Northern Health. In addition to healthy eating and active living, its mandate has broadened to include food security issues, healthy environments and policy development within communities as far south as Quesnel, as far north as Fort Nelson, as far west as Masset and as far east as McBride. HEAL North supports northern communities within the Northern Health region to assess their local needs, to develop their action plans and needs assessments, and to prioritize programs and policy to be developed in future years.
We are looking for projects and initiatives with a grassroots, can-do attitude. Our seed grants are open to groups and communities in northern BC looking to take charge of Healthy Eating & Active Living and to encourage sustainable change in their communities. HEAL is a fresh wind blowing through the North and looking to support changes that will improve health outcomes for our communities. Do you have a dream, an idea, or a program that needs a little support to get it started or to keep it going? Are you interested in food, gardening, cooking, active living and healthy lifestyles all year round? We may be able to help you meet your goals with one of our seed grants.
