The school food and nutrition project involved four elementary schools in District #27: Lac La Hache, Nesika, Mile 108 and Wildwood. The project received a small grant from HEAL, leadership from Interior Health Community Nutritionist Rose Soneff, and the support of SD #27 schools. The four schools:

  • formed advisory councils with students, parent and teacher members
  • created a shared vision
  • selected priority nutrition policy issues
  • developed a plan
  • put the plan into action
  • evaluated, planned for the future and celebrated

Three key factors led to the project's success:

  1. Leadership - the Community Nutritionist's role was a key factor
  2. Funding - the small grant helped make the project a school priority
  3. Bottom-up approach - each school examined its own actions and set its own policy
